Letter 13054

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Theudericus, King of the Franks
Date: ~603 AD
Context: Gregory praises the king's piety and wisdom; discusses ecclesiastical privileges and his legates

Most serene King Theudericus, I write to express my genuine admiration for the piety and prudence you have shown in your governance of your kingdom and in your relationship with the Church. Kings who understand that their authority is a trust from God, to be exercised in accordance with his law, are rarer than they should be, and I thank God that Frankia has such a ruler.

I also wish to address the matter of the ecclesiastical privileges we have discussed, and to say a word about your legates, who arrived safely and reported to me fully. The privileges are confirmed as agreed. Your legates acquitted themselves with dignity and I was glad to receive them.
