Letter 14011

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great

**From:** Gregory I, Bishop of Rome
**To:** John, Bishop
**Date:** ~604 AD
**Context:** Discusses the persons of three candidates elected to episcopates.

Three men have been elected to episcopal office and I write to address matters relating to each of them. Elections to the episcopate cannot be rubber-stamped without examination — the character and fitness of each man must be considered carefully. I ask you to investigate the circumstances of each election, look into any questions that have been raised about the candidates, and report back to me before any consecrations proceed. This is not a matter to be rushed. The quality of our bishops determines the health of our churches.
