Gregory to Alcyson, Bishop of Corcyra [Corfu].

Kindness must not be denied to brothers who come to their senses and return to sound counsel -- otherwise a fault would seem to weigh more heavily in bishops' minds than charity.

I received Peter, a reader of the church of Euria, in the presence of your Love's representatives. He came bearing letters from our brother and fellow bishop John. When those letters were read, I asked Peter whether he had anything to say in response to the claims of your representatives. He stated that he had been given no instructions beyond what his bishop's letter contained and had no answer to make. So I issued my ruling without delay, in accordance with the canons.

After a long time, however, Peter produced a document that he said his bishop had given him -- which caused the case to be delayed. In this document, the bishop of Euria said he hoped for permission to deposit the holy and venerable body of the blessed Donatus in the church of the blessed John within the camp of Cassiopus, acknowledging that the site lies within your diocese and offering a formal guarantee that no harm to your jurisdiction would result.

I thought it right not to leave this request without effect, since in a time of necessity he is asking for provision to be made in a way that fully acknowledges the authority of your church. For this reason, I urge your Fraternity: without delay or excuse, allow the venerable body of the saint to be deposited in the church of the blessed John -- on the condition that the bishop first provides you with a written guarantee that he will never, on any pretext, claim any jurisdiction over that territory.
