Letter 3044

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Bonifatius, bishop
Date: ~593 AD
Context: Gregory writes again to Bishop Bonifatius on a matter of ecclesiastical governance.

Gregory to Bonifatius, bishop.

I return to the matter raised in my previous letter because I want to be sure there is no ambiguity about what I am directing you to do.

The principle is this: canonical procedure exists to serve the ends of justice and good order in the church, not to obstruct them. When a procedure can be followed while also serving justice, follow it. When following it technically would produce an unjust result, bring the matter to me rather than proceeding on your own authority.

In the specific case before you: follow the canonical procedure as I described it, but with the pastoral sensitivity I expect of all bishops. The letter of the law and its spirit should in most cases align; where they seem to conflict, examine your assumptions carefully before concluding that they genuinely do.

Write to me if you need further guidance.
