Letter 4090

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Eulogius, Bishop of Alexandria, and Anastasius, Bishop of Antioch
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory writes jointly to the two most senior patriarchs of the Eastern church on a matter of importance to the whole church.

Gregory to his most holy and most dear brothers Eulogius, bishop of Alexandria, and Anastasius, bishop of Antioch.

I write to you both together because the matters I wish to raise touch both your great sees and require your joint attention.

The unity of the church depends, among other things, on the ability of its leaders to communicate honestly and to act in concert on matters of shared concern. You and I share this responsibility: to demonstrate that the Eastern and Western churches, despite the distance between us and the very different political circumstances in which we operate, remain one church governed by one faith.

I ask you to write to me more often. The communication between our sees is too infrequent for the times in which we live. And when matters arise that affect the whole church, bring them to my attention promptly; I will do the same with you.

The world needs to see the church's leadership functioning together.
Gregory
