Letter 7069

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Cyprianus, deacon [in Sicily]
Date: ~597 AD
Context: Gregory discusses the schedule of Sicilian bishops' visits to Rome — Book 7 version, updating the frequency to every 5 years.

Gregory to Cyprianus, deacon.

I want to confirm for the record what I have said elsewhere: the bishops of Sicily are now to come to Rome every five years, not every three years as was the old custom.

This change reflects the practical difficulties of travel in the present circumstances, not any reduction in the importance of maintaining contact with the apostolic see. Make sure the Sicilian bishops are informed of this updated schedule.
