Letter 9085

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Clementina, Patrician
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory denies being hostile to Clementina and counsels her to forgive injuries

My dear daughter, word has reached me that you believe yourself to be the object of my ill will. I want to dispel this misunderstanding directly: I harbor no hostility toward you. Whatever gave rise to this impression, I assure you it was not my intention. I have always regarded you with pastoral care and Christian affection, as is my duty toward all the faithful committed to my charge. But I also want to say something harder: I have heard that you yourself have suffered real injuries at others' hands, and that your grief over them has soured into bitterness. Forgive. This is not easy counsel — I know it — but it is the only counsel that leads to peace. Injuries forgiven become the seeds of virtue; injuries nursed become the food of worse sins.
