Letter 9128

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Romanus, Defender
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory orders Romanus to have Peter the defender manage a Roman church estate that handles guardianships

The estate property belonging to the Roman church that has been designated for the management of guardianships [tutelas] needs a reliable administrator. I am directing you to assign Peter the defender to oversee this property and the responsibilities that come with it. The management of guardianships is a serious legal obligation — the Church as trustee for minors and vulnerable persons must not be found negligent in this area. Ensure that Peter has access to all the necessary records and accounts, and hold him to a high standard of accountability.
