Letter 9173
Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)→Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Domellus, Payments Agent
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory apologizes for not writing through Castorius the chartulary, citing illness
I owe you an explanation. My previous communication did not come to you through Castorius, our chartulary, as it ordinarily would have — and I want you to know why. My illness has been particularly severe of late, and the management of even routine correspondence has been disrupted. I hope you will excuse what might otherwise appear to be a breach of our normal procedures. The content of what I needed to communicate was not diminished by the irregularity of its transmission; I simply could not wait for the normal channel to be available. I trust this will not create difficulties on your end.
