Worthy indeed of praise are the labors by which you both preserve the cities and by which you have driven off the sickness. For I believe, then, that it has been cast out by your own perseverance, by the wisdom of Marcellus, and by the help of the gods. For it surely belonged to those who brought you to us for the guarding of the provinces also to grant you the power to keep guard. Marcellus, for raising up the others, was being praised, but now he might fittingly even be crowned, since he has healed a man who heals countless cities. But since you have sufficiently tended to matters there, show yourself here too; and you will be made manifest to those who love you, for whom you have made being ruled a pleasant thing by the fairness of your character.

(358/59) Ἄξιοί γε ἐπαίνων οἱ πόνοι, δι’ ὧν τε σώζεις τὰς πόλεις καὶ οἶς τὴν νόσον ἀπήλασας. πιστεύω γὰρ οὖν αὐτὴν ἐκβε- βλῆσθαι σῇ τε καρτερίᾳ καὶ Μαρκέλλου σοφίᾳ καὶ θεῶν βοη- θείᾳ. τῶν γὰρ ἀγαγόντων σε παρ’ ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ φυλακῇ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἦν δήπου καὶ δύναμιν εἰς τὸ φυλάττειν δοῦναι. Μάρκελλος δὲ τοὺς μὲν ἄλλους ἀνιστὰς ἐπῃνεῖτο, νῦν δ’ ἂν εἰκότως καὶ στεφανωθείη ἰασάμενος ἄνδρα μυρίας ἰώμενον πόλεις. ἀλλ’ ἐπειδὴ τἀκεῖ τεθεράπευκας ἱκανῶς, φάνηθι καὶ τῇδε φανήσῃ δὲ ἐρῶσιν, οἷς ἡδὺ τὸ ἄρχεσθαι πεποίηκας τῇ τῶν τρόπων ἐπιεικείᾳ.
