Letter 163

To the Same Person. Christ the Savior is a man according to what is visible, but the same one is God according to what is grasped by the mind; and he is the Son of Man, both through Adam and through the Virgin, from whom he came to be -- from the former [Adam] as forefather, and from the latter [the Virgin] as mother, by a law, and yet not by the law of [ordinary] birth.

Ἄνθρωπος μὲν κατὰ τὸ φαινόμενον ὁ Σωτὴρ Χριστός, Θεὸς δὲ ὁ αὐτὸς κατὰ τὸ νοούμενον, Υἱὸς δὲ ἀνθρώπου, καὶ διὰ τὸν Ἀδάμ, καὶ διὰ τὴν Παρθένον, ἐξ ὧν ἐγένετο, τοῦ μὲν ὡς προπάτορος, τῆς δὲ ὡς μητρὸς νόμῳ, καὶ οὐ νόμῳ γεννήσεως.
