Letter 15

UnknownAmandus|c. 403 AD|paulinus nola
illness
From: Paulinus of Nola
To: Amandus, bishop
Date: ~400 AD
Context: Paulinus receives a letter from Amandus via their mutual friend Cardamas, and pours out gratitude — rejoicing that Amandus is well, that their mutual spiritual father Delphinus has recovered, and that a priest named Basilius has been helpful.

Paulinus to his holy, deservedly venerable, and dearest brother Amandus.

We received Cardamas with the joy of love and the blessing of sweetness, bringing us every good thing — letters that told us of your health, gladdening our hearts and "sweeter than honey and the honeycomb" [Psalm 19:10], whose sweetness "penetrated our inmost being like oil" [cf. Psalm 109:18]. "Our humbled bones exulted" [Psalm 51:8], and "in a voice of exultation we said to the Lord: We have received your mercy, O God" [Psalm 48:9] — "you who freed the poor from the mighty and the humble from the hand of the stronger" [Psalm 72:12; cf. Psalm 35:10].

Reasons for rejoicing converged upon my spirit from every direction: we were receiving your letters, proving you remembered us; we were hearing that you were well, as we wished; we were learning that my lord and father Delphinus had been restored to health.
