XXII. BISHOP RURICIUS TO BISHOP EUFRASIUS. We give thanks to your most sincere brotherhood in Christ the Lord, because, once word of our affliction had been carried to you, you held it of such importance to visit us at once by your letter; for you, while you bear the anxious care of our infirmity, prove the soundness of your own heart, since, as you yourself know better, the end of the commandment is charity from a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned, and he who visits the sick is strengthened in love. Whence the more particularly we hope that the one whom you seek out with your addresses, you may also aid with your prayers. And so, as the bearers of the letters return, we render back the mutual office of well-wishing, and, just as the report has reached you, we signify that we have been sufficiently afflicted according to the divine mercy, not according to our merits, since He himself, who feeds with tears in measure pressing close, has set a limit to the chastisement according to His own piety on account of our weakness, lest our infirmity should fail under the correction of His hand. And therefore, by His favorable mercy, we now announce that we are in a better state. Sending consolation to you for your grief by this conveying page, so that you who are compassionate in our labors for charity's sake may be sharers in the gladness, in the name of God, over our recovered safety, we arrange this by the reading of the same page.
