You ought, O friends, knowing the words of the divine Scriptures spoken by the Spirit, not to whet your tongue against the One who fashioned you; for both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all of one. But since, being mastered by ignorance or goaded all about by envy, you do not receive Peter, the worthy servant of Christ [Peter of the Beautiful Mountain (Kalon Oros)], though God sends forth His divine grace through him now, just as through the apostles in signs and wonders, but instead parade him about as a sorcerer and an impious man, you who do not know how to keep silence about the blamelessness of his life. For we, having thoroughly examined both his manner of life and his faith, have nowhere found him going astray; rather we have found him surpassing even many of the ascetics in the times that are ours. Those brothers who faithfully receive him are most exact searchers of the holy liturgies and of the words of the Gospel, and are most holy partakers in the Church of Christ. But those who do not accept the things enjoined by us, the lowly, do not receive the God-spoken word of the Gospel which says most plainly, "He who believes in me, the works that I do he also shall do, and greater than these shall he do"; and these, inasmuch as they are mastered by a zeal that springs from want of instruction and by a manner of impiety, are by apostolic vote and by the Fathers' canon subjected to the anathema.
