Aregius, of Vapincum

bishop of Vapincum (Gap)|Vapincum (Gap)
Aregius (also spelled Arigius) was bishop of Vapincum (modern Gap, in the Hautes-Alpes of southeastern Gaul) in the late sixth century. He belonged to the Gallo-Roman episcopate of Merovingian Provence and is attested through ecclesiastical correspondence and the literary culture of his day: he received letters touching on church affairs from the circle of Pope Gregory the Great (590-604) and is among the Gallic bishops addressed in the poetry of Venantius Fortunatus. Beyond these references and his appearances in the conciliar records of the period, little of his personal life is documented; he is representative of the provincial bishops who anchored Roman ecclesiastical institutions in Gaul after the collapse of imperial authority in the West.
