Gemellus, a

royal agent and administrator of Provence under Theoderic (vir spectabilis); correspondent in Cassiodorus and Avitus of Vienne|Vienne / Rhone valley, Gaul
Gemellus is known chiefly as a recipient of official letters in Cassiodorus's Variae and in the correspondence of Avitus of Vienne, placing him in the early-sixth-century Latin world of the Ostrogothic kingdom and Burgundian Gaul. A Gemellus of this name appears in the Variae as a vir spectabilis whom Theoderic appointed to administer the lands of Provence (the Rhone valley around Arles and Vienne) after they came under Ostrogothic control around 508-510, charged with provisioning, justice, and the integration of the newly acquired province. He is otherwise little attested outside this administrative correspondence, and is best understood as a royal agent and provincial official of Gaul under Theoderic rather than a figure with an independent biography; details of his birth, death, and career beyond these letters are not securely known.
