Paulus, of Naples

Neapolitan correspondent (late antique Italy)|Naples (Neapolis), Italy
Otherwise little attested, Paulus of Naples is known chiefly as the recipient of letters within the late antique Italian correspondence preserved under Gregory the Great and Cassiodorus, placing him in the orbit of sixth- to early seventh-century Naples (Roman Neapolis), a major port and ecclesiastical center of Campania. The name Paulus was extremely common in this period, and the surviving letters do not securely fix his office; he was probably a Neapolitan cleric, civic figure, or local correspondent rather than a major public official. No reliable birth or death dates, and no firmly documented career, can be assigned to him from the correspondence alone.
