Ennodius to Symmachus. He foresees a needful thing who commends the bereaved and the foreigners to the parent of all: the one road of relief is your apostolic office, which heals those who are abroad. Far be it to call afflicted those whom it has befallen to reach you: parents [their fathers], homeland, and wealth they do not seek elsewhere, those whom the care of your crown has taken up. The bearer of the present letter, nobly born, seeks out Roman studies that will profit him as a testimony of his free birth. Him my assurance, the assurance of your suppliant, commends to your Blessedness, so that, the services of greeting having been graciously received, what you do by custom you may redouble out of regard for me.
