Letter 5016

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Datianus, Metropolitan Bishop
Date: ~595 AD
Context: Gregory again asks Datianus to have compassion on him in his affliction

My dear Datianus, I come to you again in my affliction — and I am grateful that you are a man I can come to. The burdens I carry have not lightened, and my body's complaints have not abated. I ask once more for your prayers and your sympathy, and I offer you mine in whatever difficulties you yourself face. Friendship between bishops, in a world as difficult as ours has become, is one of God's genuine mercies.
