Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Brunhild, Queen of the Franks [Austrasia]
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory commends Hilarius to Queen Brunhild's protection.

Gregory to the most excellent Queen Brunhild.

A man named Hilarius is in need of the protection that only someone in your position can provide. I commend him to you.

He has served the church's interests and deserves better than he has received. The details of his situation are known to those who will present this letter on his behalf. I ask only that your Excellence receive him fairly and extend to him whatever protection his situation requires.

Your reputation for supporting the church and its servants is well known to me. I trust that reputation to be operative in this instance.

With my blessing and gratitude.
Gregory
