Letter 1523

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: Narcissus the Sophist
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore commends faith in God as easy to understand, safe to hold, and impossible to defeat.

I cannot understand how unbelievers manage to make light of faith in God, whose knowledge is easy to acquire, whose possession is secure, and whose outcome is invincible. The knowledge: because God has disclosed himself plainly to all who seek him. The possession: because once truly taken hold of, nothing can wrest it away. The outcome: because it ends not in disappointment but in the very life of God.
