Letter 53

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: An unnamed person
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore rebukes someone who carries Scripture but lives immorally.

Why do you carry books around for nothing, when your reading is contradicted by your conduct? The Lord condemned even idle gazing, yet you not only chase after beauty but have — as I have learned — embraced a slavish way of life, taking a prostitute as your companion and choosing eternal disgrace. You ought to consider what is written: "Marriage is honorable in all, and the marriage bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge" [Hebrews 13:4]. Pursue the one and despise the other. "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" [Hebrews 10:31]. Your books will testify against you on that day.
