Letter 85: To Paulinus (400 AD)

[Paulinus of Nola — himself a distinguished writer and thinker — had asked Jerome two theological questions: (1) How can scriptural passages like Exodus 7:13 and Romans 9:16, which seem to deny free will, be reconciled with the concept of human freedom? (2) Why does Paul say in 1 Corinthians 7:14 that the children of believers are 'holy' even without baptism? For the first, Jerome directs Paulinus to his new translation of Origen's On First Principles. For the second, he cites Tertullian's explanation.]

1. Your words urge me to write, but your eloquence deters me from doing so. As a letter-writer, you're practically as good as Cicero himself...

[Jerome somewhat ruefully admits he can't match Paulinus's elegant prose, then directs him to Origen and Tertullian for answers.]

Modern English rendering for readability. See the 19th-century translation or original Latin/Greek for scholarly use.
