Letter 781

LibaniusΤῷ αὐτῷ|libanius

To the same. (362/63)

You know, I think, Eustochius from Palestine — a man steeped in law who strengthens the laws with the power of his eloquence. He proved of great value to Apellion, and of even greater value to old Macedonius, having run to the Great City [Constantinople] on his behalf and laboring alongside him everywhere.

He has also labored much on our behalf, and on no small matters. If he asks anything, I must serve at once or appear ungrateful. Now he wants Gerontius to escape the council, if any grounds can be found. He says the man has a strong case, and I believe him.

So show yourself favorable, and make it so that I do not owe everything to the admirable Eustochius.
