Letter 423

To the Same Person. Having great diseases of contempt, and of conceit, and of self-opinion, and of such things stored up in the hidden chambers [of the soul], we are often unaware of them in most people, and in our very selves, on account of our lack of self-examination. But the great physician of our souls knows how he will tend to the hidden things. Let us therefore not be indignant, nor become faint-hearted and despairing at the things which the Lord fittingly lays upon us.

Μεγάλα νοσήματα ὑπεροψίας, καὶ τύφου, καὶ οἰήσεως, καὶ τῶν τοιούτων ἐν τοῖς κρυπτοῖς ἔχοντες ταμιείοις, τοὺς πολλοὺς τῶν ἀνθρώπων, καὶ ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς πολλάκις λανθάνομεν διὰ τὸ ἀνεπίσκεπτον. Ἀλλ’ ὁ μέγας τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν ἰατρὸς οἶδε, πῶς ἐπιμελήσεται τῶν κρυφίων. Μὴ οὖν ἀγανατῶμεν, μηδὲ μικροψύχωμεν, καὶ ἀποδυσπετῶμεν ἐφ’ οἷς ἡμῖν ἁρμοζόντως ἐπάγει ὁ Κύριος.
