Letter 635

To the Same Person. "Submit yourself to the Lord, and make supplication to him," he says in the thirty-sixth psalm [Psalm 36(37):7, LXX numbering], and "Hope," and "he will bring forth your righteousness as the light"—out of the darkness of distressing things, the things that choke the reasoning faculty; suddenly, by a change, he shows a steadfast noonday, and a calm laughing forth out of the storm and the surging waves. For "even if I sit in darkness," says another prophet [Micah 7:8–9], "he will lead me out into the light"—near, away from the face of darkness, and a light to be looked for out of the gloom.

«Ὑποτάγηθι τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ ἱκέτευσον», φησὶν ἐν τριακοστῷ καὶ ἕκτῳ ψαλμῷ, καὶ Ἔλπισον, καὶ ἐξοίσει ὡς φῶς τὴν δικαιοσύνην σου, » ἀπὸ σκότους τῶν θλιβερῶν, τῶν ἐναποπνιγόντων τὸν λογισμόν, αἰφνίδιον ἐκ μεταβολῆς, σταθερὰν δεικνύων μεσημβρίαν, καὶ γαλήνην ἐκ χειμῶνος, καὶ τρικυμίας γελοῦσαν. Κἂν γὰρ καθήσω ἐν τῷ σκότει, φησὶν ἄλλος προφήτης, ἐξάξει με εἰς τὸ φῶς ἐγγὺς ἀπὸ προσώπου σκότους, καὶ φῶς προσδόκιμον ἐξ ἀχλύος. •
