Letter 169: Theodore Studite, Letter 169; Greek heading: Ἀθανασίῳ ἡγουμένῳ.

This letter of yours too is stamped with God's own seal, and it has gladdened us in our lowliness on account of your good health and your manly courage, but it has grieved us by the praises and encomia with which you dignify us, who are without dignity and careless and who have done no good thing whatever upon the earth. For the saints say this out of humility, but I, the sinner, say it out of truth. Yet the affection of your fatherly holiness attaches to us qualities we do not possess, so as by all means to make us better, since praise too often profits a man. Thanks, then, be to the holy God that you bear your bonds and your imprisonment with good courage, O noble soldier of Christ. For you shoot forth, as it were, your divine zeal and your acts of love like fire through your honored words; and the most excellent thing is that you do so with knowledge and with elevated contemplation [theoria], which the leaping away from the midst and the running up on high of the confession of Christ has granted you. In this confession may you also be kept guarded to the very end, shining as a torchbearer like the morning star to those engaged in the night-battle of the heresy [hairesis], and perhaps also as a pillar and bulwark of the truth, propping up those who are slack and buckling at the knees. But indeed may you also, as a lofty arm, stretch out a hand to those who have fallen and slipped. And this was made plain to us by the document addressed to the man of Photeinoudion [a place or estate associated with Photeinos]; you did well, if indeed it should accomplish anything; but in any case you yourself have fulfilled what was needful. The undertaking must, however, be considered, lest perhaps it not only fail to be of any benefit but even become a cause of harm, should the one who receives the letter divulge it abroad, and from this disturbance run back upon all the confessors of Christ. Therefore, as the Apostle says, testing all things, hold fast to what is good [1 Thessalonians 5:21]. Do not, then, forget my lowliness, O beloved one and namesake of him of many contests [Athanasius, whose name means 'immortal,' here associated with the much-suffering athlete of the faith], but pray unceasingly that I may be delivered from the snares of the devil, both as to the inner and as to the outer man.

Καὶ αὕτη σου ἡ ἐπιστολὴ θεοχάρακτος, εὐφράνασα μὲν ἡμᾶς τοὺς ταπεινοὺς ἐπὶ τῇ ὑγιείᾳ καὶ εὐανδρίᾳ σου, λυπήσασα δὲ ἐπὶ τοῖς ἐπαίνοις καὶ ἐγκωμίοις, οἷς κατασεμνύνεις ἡμᾶς τοὺς ἀσέμνους καὶ ἀτημελεῖς καὶ μηδ' ὁτιοῦν πεποιηκότας ἀγαθὸν ἐπὶ γῆς· λέγουσι μὲν γὰρ τοῦτο ἐκ ταπεινώσεως οἱ ἅγιοι, ἐγὼ δὲ ὁ ἁμαρτωλὸς ἐξ ἀληθείας. ἀλλ' ἡ φιλία τῆς πατρικῆς σου ἁγιωσύνης τὰ οὐκ ὄντα προσάπτει ἡμῖν, ἵνα πάντως βελτίους ποιήσῃ, ἐπειδὴ πολλάκις καὶ ἔπαινος ὀνίνησι. Χάρις οὖν τῷ ἁγίῳ θεῷ ὅτι εὐψύχως φέρεις τὰ δεσμὰ καὶ τὴν φρουράν, γενναῖε Χριστοῦ στρατιῶτα. τὰς γὰρ θείας προθυμίας καὶ ἀγάπας σου οἱονεὶ πυροβολεῖς διὰ τῶν τιμίων λόγων σου καὶ τὸ κάλλιστον, ὅτι μετὰ γνώσεως καὶ ἀνηγμένης θεωρίας, ἥν σοι παρέσχεν ἡ ἐκ μέσου ἀποπήδησις καὶ ἐφ' ὕψους ἀναδρομὴ τῆς Χριστοῦ ὁμολογίας· ἐν ᾗ καὶ περιφυλαχθείης τέλεον, φρυκτωρῶν ὡς ἑῷος ἀστὴρ τοῖς ἐν νυκτομαχίᾳ τῆς αἱρέσεως, τάχα δὲ καὶ ὡς στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας, ὑποστηρίζων τοὺς χαύνους καὶ ὀκλάζοντας. ἀλλὰ μὴν καὶ ὡς βραχίων ὑψηλὸς χεῖρα ὀρέγοι τοὺς ὑποπεπτωκότας καὶ ὀλισθήσαντας. καὶ τοῦτο ἐδήλωσεν ἡμῖν τὸ πρὸς τὸν Φωτεινουδίου γραμματεῖον· εὖ ἔπραξας, εἴπερ καὶ ἀνύσειέν τι· τέως δ' οὖν αὐτὸς τὸ δέον ἐπλήρωσας. σκεπτέον δὲ τὸ ἐγχείρημα μήπως πρὸς τὸ μηδὲν ὀνῆσαι ἔτι καὶ βλάβης αἴτιον εἴη, ἐκφερομυθοῦντος τὸ γράμμα τοῦ δεχομένου κἀντεῦθεν ἀνατρεχούσης ταραχῆς ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ὁμολογητὰς Χριστοῦ· πάντα οὖν δοκιμάζοντες, φησὶν ὁ ἀπόστολος, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε. Μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ τοιγαροῦν τῆς ταπεινώσεώς μου, ἠγαπημένε καὶ τοῦ πολυάθλου συνώνυμε, ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθαι ὅπως ῥυσθείην ἐκ τῶν παγίδων τοῦ διαβόλου καὶ κατὰ τὸν ἔνδον καὶ ἔξωθεν ἄνθρωπον.
