Letter 271: Theodore Studite, Letter 271; Greek heading: Πασχαλίῳ πάπᾳ Ῥώμησ.

To him who is in all things most holy, the great luminary, the foremost high priest, our lord and apostolic master the Pope: John, Theodosius, Athanasius, John, Theodore, the least of presbyters and abbots of the monasteries of Kathara, of Pikridion, of Paulopetrion, of Eukairia, and of Stoudios. By now your supreme Beatitude has surely heard, in some fashion, of the things that have befallen the Church among us on account of our sins (for we have become a byword and a tale among all the nations, to speak in the words of Scripture); yet perhaps the report has not reached you fully and in the form of a letter. For this reason we, the least of men, even though we happen to be the last member of the body of Christ, nevertheless, with our head [the patriarch] barred from us and the foremost of the brotherhood scattered here and there, have been able, through being near to one another and through reporting to one another, to become one in spirit and in word, and so we write these things, even if it be presumptuously. Hear, O apostolic head, shepherd appointed by God over the sheep of Christ, key-bearer of the kingdom of heaven, rock of the faith upon which the catholic Church has been built. For you are Peter, adorning and governing the throne of Peter. Grievous wolves have crept into the fold of the Lord; the gates of hell, as of old, have broken against it. What is this? Christ is persecuted together with his Mother and his servants, since indeed the assault upon the icon [eikon: the sacred image] is a persecution of its prototype [the one represented]. Hence the casting down of the patriarchal head, the exiles and confinements of bishops and priests, of monks and nuns, the imprisonments and irons, the tortures and finally the deaths. O dreadful tidings! The venerable icon of our God and Savior, before which even the demons tremble, has been outraged and set at naught, not only in the reigning city [Constantinople], but throughout every land and town. Altars have been destroyed, churches have been profaned, holy things have been defiled; blood has been shed, and is being shed, of those who hold fast to the Gospel; there are persecutions and banishments of those who still remain. Every devout mouth has fallen silent for fear of death; the opposing and blasphemous tongue has been opened wide; all wavering flesh has been shaken. "Woe is me," one says, "for we have become as one who gathers stubble in the harvest, and as a gleaning in the vintage, when there is no cluster of grapes." Upon us, O blessed one, have all these things come. Who would not grieve at them, beholding in himself the sufferings of his neighbor? And who would not reckon them to be the forerunners of the coming of the Antichrist, differing from it only as much as an image differs from its archetype, against which [Antichrist] also rages? Come therefore now from the West, you who imitate Christ; arise and do not reject us utterly. To you Christ our God has said, "And you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brethren." Behold the time and the place. Help us, you who have been appointed by God for this; stretch out a hand so far as it is possible. You have the power that comes from God, by virtue of being foremost of all in the office in which you have been placed. Frighten away, we beg you, the heretical beasts with the pipe of your divine word. O good shepherd, lay down your life for the sheep of Christ, we entreat you. Let all that is beneath heaven hear that those who have dared these things, and who indeed anathematize our holy Fathers, are anathematized synodically by you. May this be acceptable to God, a joy to angels and saints, a support to those who are shaken, a seal to those who stand firm, an uplifting to those who have fallen, an exultation to the whole Church of the orthodox, and indeed to your Eminence an everlasting memorial, after the manner of those who went before you of old: who, in like seasons, having done by the Spirit's prompting the very things now asked of you by us sinners, are both remembered and called blessed. And we wholly believe that, bent by the mercy of your compassion, you will receive our humble letter, in imitation of Christ, who, being God of all, did not disdain both to receive the letter from Abgar [Abgar, king of Edessa, who by tradition wrote to Christ] and to write back to it in reply.

Τῷ τὰ πάντα παναγεστάτῳ, φωστῆρι μεγάλῳ, ἀρχιερεῖ πρωτίστῳ, κυρίῳ ἡμῶν δεσπότῃ ἀποστολικῷ πάπᾳ, Ἰωάννης, Θεοδόσιος, Ἀθα νάσιος, Ἰωάννης, Θεόδωρος, ἐλάχιστοι πρεσβύτεροι καὶ ἡγούμενοι τῶν Καθαρᾶ, τῶν Πικριδίου, τοῦ Παυλοπετρίου, τῆς Εὐκαιρίας, τῶν Στουδίου. Ἤδη που πάντως ἤκουσται τῇ κορυφαίᾳ ὑμῶν μακαριότητι τὰ κατὰ τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν τῇ καθ' ἡμᾶς ἐκκλησίᾳ ἐπελθόντα (καὶ γὰρ γεγενήμεθα εἰς παραβολὴν καὶ διήγημα ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι, γραφικῶς εἰπεῖν), οὐ μὴν ἴσως ἡ ἀπαγγελία ἐντελῶς τε καὶ ἐπιστολικῶς. διόπερ ἡμεῖς οἱ ἐλάχιστοι, εἰ καὶ μέλος που τοῦ σώματος Χριστοῦ ἔσχατον τυγχάνοντες, ὅμως τῆς κεφαλῆς ἡμῶν εἰργομένης τῶν τε ἐν τῇ ἀδελφότητι προεχόντων ὧδέ τε κἀκεῖσε διεσπαρμένων ἠδυνήθημέν πως ἐκ τοῦ σύνεγγυς εἶναι καὶ διὰ τῆς εἰς ἀλλήλους καταμηνύσεως εἰς ἓν γενέσθαι καὶ πνεῦμα καὶ ῥῆμα, γράφοντες, εἰ καὶ τολμηρῶς, τάδε. Ἄκουε, ἀποστολικὴ κάρα, θεοπρόβλητε ποιμὴν τῶν Χριστοῦ προβάτων, κλειδοῦχε τῆς οὐρανῶν βασιλείας, πέτρα τῆς πίστεως, ἐφ' ᾗ ᾠκοδόμηται ἡ καθολικὴ ἐκκλησία· Πέτρος γὰρ σύ, τὸν Πέτρου θρόνον κοσμῶν καὶ διέπων· λύκοι βαρεῖς εἰσεφθάρησαν ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ Κυρίου, πύλαι ᾅδου ὡς πάλαι προσερράγησαν αὐτῇ. τί τοῦτο; διώκεται Χριστὸς σὺν μητρὶ καὶ θεράπουσιν, εἴπερ ἡ τῆς εἰκόνος καταδρομὴ τοῦ πρωτοτύπου διωγμός· ἐντεῦθεν κατένεξις πατριαρχικῆς κεφαλῆς ἐξορίαι τε καὶ περιορισμοὶ ἀρχιερέων τε καὶ ἱερέων, μοναστῶν τε καὶ μοναζουσῶν, εἱρκταί τε καὶ σιδηρώσεις, βάσανοί τε καὶ τέλος θάνατοι. ὢ τοῦ φοβεροῦ ἀκούσματος· ἡ σεπτὴ εἰκὼν τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ, ἣν καὶ δαίμονες φρίττουσιν, ἐνύβρισται, ἐξουδένωται, οὐ μόνον ἐν τῇ βασιλευούσῃ πόλει, ἀλλὰ γὰρ καὶ κατὰ πᾶσαν χώραν καὶ πολίχνην. θυσιαστήρια ἠφανίσθη, ναοὶ ἠμαυρώθησαν, ἱερὰ ἐκοινώθη, ἐχέθη αἵματα καὶ χέεται τῶν ἀντεχομένων τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, διωγμοὶ καὶ φυγαδεῖαι τῶν ἔτι ὑπολελειμμένων. ἐσίγησεν πᾶν εὐσεβοῦν στόμα δέει θανάτου, ἠνέῳκται ἡ ἀντίθετος καὶ βλάσφημος γλῶσσα, σεσάλευται πᾶσα σὰρξ ἀμφοτερίζουσα. οἴμμοι, φησίν, ὅτι ἐγενήθημεν ὡς συνάγων καλάμην ἐν ἀμητῷ καὶ ὡς ἐπιφυλλίδα ἐν τρυγητῷ, οὐχ ὑπάρχοντος βότρυος. Ἐφ' ἡμᾶς, ὦ μάκαρ, ἐγένετο πάντα ταῦτα. ἃ τίς μὲν οὐκ ἐπιστυγνάσειεν, εἰς ἑαυτὸν τὰ τοῦ πλησίον ἀναθεωρῶν πάθη, τίς δὲ οὐ λογίσοιτο προεισόδια εἶναι τῆς τοῦ Ἀντιχρίστου παρουσίας, τοσοῦτον διαφέροντα ὅσον εἰκὼν ἀρχετύπου, ἐφ' ᾗ καὶ μαίνεται; δεῦρο δὴ οὖν ἀπὸ δυσμῶν ὁ χριστομίμητος, ἀνάστηθι καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ εἰς τέλος· πρὸς σὲ εἴρηκε Χριστὸς ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν, καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας στηρίξεις τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου. ἴδε ὁ χρόνος καὶ ὁ τόπος· βοήθησον ἡμῖν ὁ ὑπὸ θεοῦ τεταγμένος εἰς τοῦτο, ὄρεξον χεῖρα καθ' ὅσον οἷόν τέ ἐστιν· ἔχεις τὸ ἰσχύειν παρὰ θεῷ ἐκ τοῦ πάντων πρωτεύειν ἐν ᾧ καὶ ἐτέθης. πτόησον, δεόμεθα, τοὺς αἱρετικοὺς θῆρας σύριγγι τοῦ θείου λόγου σου· ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός, θὲς τὴν ψυχὴν ὑπὲρ τῶν Χριστοῦ προβάτων, ἱκετεύομεν. ἀκουσάτω ἡ ὑπ' οὐρανὸν ὅτι ὑφ' ὑμῶν ἀναθεματίζονται συνοδικῶς οἱ ταῦτα τετολμηκότες καί γε ἀναθεματίζοντες τοὺς ἁγίους πατέρας ἡμῶν. τοῦτο εἴη θεῷ εὐπρόσιτον, ἀγγέλοις καὶ ἁγίοις χαρμόσυνον, σαλευομένοις στήριγμα, ἑδραιουμένοις ἐπισφράγισμα, καταπεπτωκόσιν ἀνάστημα, πάσῃ ἐκκλησίᾳ ὀρθοδόξων ἀγαλλίαμα, καί γε τῇ σῇ κορυφότητι κατὰ τοὺς πάλαι προηγησαμένους μνημόσυνον αἰώνιον· οἳ ἐν τοῖς ὁμοίοις καιροῖς τὰ παρ' ἡμῶν τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν νῦν αἰτούμενα δεδρακότες πνευματοκινήτως καὶ μνημονεύονται καὶ μεμακάρινται. Πάντως δὲ πιστεύομεν ὡς ἐλέῳ οἰκτιρμῶν καμπτόμενος δέξῃ ἡμῶν τὸ εὐτελὲς γράμμα, Χριστὸν μιμούμενος, ὅς, θεὸς ὢν τῶν ἁπάντων, οὐκ ἀπηξίωσε τὴν παρὰ Αὐγάρου ἐπιστολὴν καὶ δέξασθαι καὶ πρὸς αὐτὴν ἀντιγράψαι.
