Letter 272: Theodore Studite, Letter 272; Greek heading: Τῷ αὐτῷ.

To the most holy father, the chief and universal luminary, our lord and apostolic master the Pope, John, Theodosius, Athanasius, Theodore, the least of presbyters and abbots of the monasteries of Kathara, of Pikridion, of Paulopetrion, and of Stoudios. The Dayspring from on high [cf. Luke 1:78] has visited us, Christ our God, who has set Your Beatitude in the West, like a lamp shining with divine light, for the illumination of the Church that is under heaven, upon the foremost apostolic throne. For we who were held fast in the darkness and shadow of death by the wicked heresy have perceived an intelligible light, and we have laid aside the cloud of despondency and have looked up again toward good hopes, having learned, through the brethren and fellow servants whom we sent, what great things, and how great, Your holy Headship has both done and said: that you did not so much as admit the heretical apocrisiaries [legates/envoys] into your sacred presence, treating them as footpads, but justly sent them packing far away; while at our miseries, through the hearing of the letters and the narration of those we sent, you grieved and groaned in imitation of God, as over your own members. And in truth we, the lowly, have recognized that a manifest successor of the chief of the apostles [Peter] presides over the Roman Church. Truly we are persuaded that the Lord has not utterly abandoned the Church among us, since the one and only succor for it, from above and from the beginning, in the circumstances that befall it, has lain in you, by the providence of God. You, therefore, are truly the undefiled and untrafficked fountain of orthodoxy from the beginning; you are the calm harbor of the whole Church, removed from every heretical tempest; you are the God-chosen city of refuge for salvation. But because it is presumptuous for us, the pitiable and unworthy, to heap up praises upon your God-given name, which has long since been blessed by divine tongues, we ought rather to come to the matter that pains us. Now the impious do not cease to do their accustomed deeds with all zeal and madness, dragging and pulling everyone down into the pit of heresy, terrifying them with death; for it is utterly necessary that whoever does not yield be subjected to the wicked flame of the scourges, together with the rest, so that little by little (most grievous of all) some even of those who had contended fall away. But we, again, the lowly and the last among the members, daring on behalf both of our own sacred Head and of the surpassing fatherhood and brotherhood that confronts us, intercede and earnestly entreat that your holy and apostolic soul be moved: first, to that which we also believe you do, namely not to leave off your God-inclined prayer for the strengthening and preservation of all (yes, we beseech your most sacred bowels of compassion); and then, to bring to completion, with God, those things which have been resolved and determined by it [your apostolic soul], moved by the Spirit, for the benefit of us the lowly, and for the eternal blessedness of your own virtue.

Τῷ παναγεστάτῳ πατρί, κορυφαίῳ φωστῆρι οἰκουμενικῷ, κυρίῳ ἡμῶν δεσπότῃ ἀποστολικῷ πάπᾳ, Ἰωάννης, Θεοδόσιος, Ἀθανάσιος, Θεόδωρος, ἐλάχιστοι πρεσβύτεροι καὶ ἡγούμενοι τῶν Καθαρᾶ, τοῦ Πικριδίου, τοῦ Παυλοπετρίου, τῶν Στουδίου. Ἐπεσκέψατο ἡμᾶς ἀνατολὴ ἐξ ὕψους, Χριστὸς ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν, τὴν σὴν ἐν τῇ δύσει μακαριότητα ὥσπερ τινὰ λυχνίαν θεαυγῆ εἰς ἐπίλαμψιν τῆς ὑπ' οὐρανὸν ἐκκλησίας ἐπὶ τὸν ἀποστολικὸν πρώτιστον θρόνον θέμενος. καὶ γὰρ ᾔσθημεν φωτὸς νοεροῦ οἱ ἐν σκότει καὶ σκιᾷ θανάτου ἐνισχημένοι τῆς πονηρᾶς αἱρέσεως καὶ τὸ νέφος τῆς ἀθυμίας ἀπεθέμεθα καὶ πρὸς χρηστὰς ἐλπίδας ἀνενεύσαμεν, μεμαθηκότες δι' ὧν ἀπεστείλαμεν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν καὶ συνδούλων οἷα καὶ ἡλίκα πέπραχέ τε καὶ λέλεχεν ἡ ἁγία ὑμῶν κορυφαιότης, τοὺς μὲν αἱρετικοὺς ἀποκρισιαρίους ὡς λωποδύτας μηδὲ εἰς ἱερὰν αὐτῆς θέαν προσηκαμένη, πόρρω δὲ ὄντας ἐνδίκως ἀποπεμψαμένη, τοῖς δὲ ἡμετέροις ταλαιπωρήμασι διὰ τῆς ἐπακροάσεως τῶν γραμμάτων καὶ διηγήσεως τῶν ἀποσταλέντων ἐπιστυγνάσασά τε καὶ ἐπιστενάξασα θεομιμήτως ὡς ἐπὶ οἰκείοις μέλεσι. καὶ ὄντως ἔγνωμεν οἱ ταπεινοὶ ὡς ἐναργὴς διάδοχος τοῦ τῶν ἀποστόλων κορυφαίου προέστη τῆς Ῥωμαϊκῆς ἐκκλησίας· ἀληθῶς πεπείσμεθα ὅτι οὐκ ἐγκατέλιπεν Κύριος τέλεον τὴν καθ' ἡμᾶς ἐκκλησίαν, μιᾶς καὶ μόνης τῆς παρ' ὑμῶν ἐπικουρίας ἄνωθέν τε καὶ ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἐν ταῖς συμβαινούσαις περιστάσεσιν ὑπαρχούσης αὐτῇ θεοῦ προμηθείᾳ. ὑμεῖς οὖν ὡς ἀληθῶς ἡ ἀθόλωτος καὶ ἀκαπήλευτος πηγὴ ἐξ ἀρχῆς τῆς ὀρθοδοξίας, ὑμεῖς ὁ πάσης αἱρετικῆς ζάλης ἀνῳκισμένος εὔδιος λιμὴν τῆς ὅλης ἐκκλησίας, ὑμεῖς ἡ θεόλεκτος πόλις τοῦ φυγαδευτηρίου τῆς σωτηρίας. ἀλλ' ὅτι τολμηρὸν παρ' ἡμῶν τῶν οἰκτρῶν καὶ ἀναξίων ἐγκώμια συναίρειν τὴν ὑπὸ θείων γλωσσῶν πάλαι μεμακαρισμένην ὑμῶν θεωνυμίαν δέον ἐπὶ τὸ πονοῦν ἐλθεῖν. Οἱ μὲν οὖν ἀσεβοῦντες τὰ συνήθη σὺν πάσῃ σπουδῇ καὶ μανίᾳ ποιεῖν οὐκ ἐνδιδόασι, πάντας ὑφέλκοντες καὶ κατασπῶντες εἰς τὸ τῆς αἱρέσεως βάραθρον, δεδιττομένους τὸν θάνατον· ἀνάγκη γὰρ πᾶσα τὸν μὴ εἴκοντα τῇ πονηρᾷ φλογὶ τῶν μαστίγων ὑποβληθῆναι σὺν τοῖς ἀκολούθοις, ὥστε κατὰ μικρὸν ὑπορρέειν (τὸ σχετλιώτατον) καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν τῶν ἠθληκότων. ἡμεῖς δὲ καὶ αὖθις οἱ ταπεινοὶ καὶ ἔσχατοι ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν, ὑπέρ τε τῆς οἰκείας ἱερᾶς κεφαλῆς καὶ τῆς ἐνισταμένης ὑπερεχούσης πατρότητός τε καὶ ἀδελφότητος τολμῶντες, πρεσβεύομέν τε καὶ ἐκλιπαροῦμεν παρακληθῆναί σου τὴν ἁγίαν καὶ ἀποστολικὴν ψυχὴν πρῶτον μέν, ὅπερ καὶ πιστεύομεν ποιεῖν, μὴ καταλῆξαι τῆς ὑπὲρ στηριγμοῦ καὶ διασώσεως ἁπάντων θεοκλινοῦς προσευχῆς (ναί, δεόμεθα τὰ ἱερώτατα σπλάγχνα), ἔπειτα, ἃ πνευματοκινήτως αὐτῇ βεβούλευται καὶ ὥρισται ἐπ' ὠφελείᾳ μὲν ἡμῶν τῶν ταπεινῶν, αἰωνίῳ δὲ μακαρισμῷ τῆς οἰκείας ἀρετῆς, εἰς πέρας σὺν θεῷ ἀγαγεῖν.
