Braulio of Zaragoza

bishop|585-651 AD|Zaragoza
Braulio (c. 585-651) was bishop of Zaragoza (Caesaraugusta) and one of the leading intellectual and ecclesiastical figures of Visigothic Spain. A disciple of Isidore of Seville, he served as the great scholar's literary executor, dividing the Etymologiae into its twenty books and compiling the influential catalogue of Isidore's writings (the Renotatio Isidori). Braulio took part in the major church councils of Toledo, wrote the Life of Saint Aemilian (Vita Sancti Aemiliani), and famously rebuffed Pope Honorius I's reproach to the Spanish bishops with a confident defense of his church. His extensive correspondence, preserved alongside the Epistolae Wisigothicae, is a prime window onto the learning, politics, and piety of seventh-century Iberia.
