Urbanus

correspondent of Libanius and Theodoret of Cyrrhus (late-antique Syria)|Antioch / Cyrrhus region, Roman Syria
Otherwise little attested, Urbanus is known chiefly as a correspondent who receives letters preserved in the collections of Libanius, the pagan sophist of Antioch (d. c. 393), and Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus (d. c. 458/466). The name Urbanus is common, and the letters addressed to it in these two corpora may well belong to more than one individual; in either case the recipient was a figure active in the late-antique milieu of Roman Syria, plausibly a local notable, official, or member of the educated curial class with whom these authors corresponded. Beyond his appearance as an addressee, nothing securely datable about his career, offices, or life can be established from the surviving evidence, and no specific dates or titles should be assigned to him.
