Although both reason and the character of your holy place admonish your Fraternity to extend protection to monasteries, and especially to those established under your authority, nevertheless, because Fuscus the abbot, the bearer of these presents, wished his monastery to be commended by us out of an abundance of caution, we exhort you with these words: since he asserts that the monastery itself is troubled to no purpose by the disturbance of those who come upon it, let the protection of your Holiness guard it, and not permit it to be burdened by anyone against the order of reason, so that, while no weight of any unjust matter afflicts it, you may both be seen to have profitably bestowed that which belongs to a priest, and the congregation dwelling there, which is occupied in the praises of God, may not be subjected unreasonably to any vexations.
