To Athanasius the Presbyter. The inheritance of the Fathers is a treasure that each generation must guard, transmit, and apply anew. We do not merely repeat what they said — for each age has its own questions and its own challenges — but we build upon the foundation they laid, extending the structure without altering the design. The person who ignores the Fathers is a fool who tries to build without a foundation; the person who merely repeats the Fathers is a parrot who produces sounds without understanding. The true theologian is the one who has so deeply absorbed the spirit of the Fathers that he can address the questions of his own age with their wisdom, applying timeless principles to contemporary problems without either betraying the tradition or becoming its slave. This is the living tradition of the Church: not a museum of antiquities but a flowing river, always the same water and yet always new, carrying the life-giving truth from generation to generation until the end of time.
