Letter 545: I once wrote to you that, with one exception, the entire city council is on my side.

To Aristaenetus. I once said to you in a letter that, except for one man, the council is with us. Of these who are with us, among the foremost is Letoios, who spares neither word nor deed, and I would add that he spares not even money. For he does not allow the eagerness of those young men whom it befalls to love learning amid poverty to be harmed by their poverty. He also undertakes the embassy himself, having released my uncle from the journey; for since that man's body had grown weary, while the governor pressed upon him and ordered him either to go himself or to persuade another no worse than himself, the one pointed out this man, and the other took the task upon himself. So now show yourself toward this man such as you would have been toward that one.

Ἀρισταινέτῳ. (357) Εἶπόν ποτε πρὸς σὲ γράφων ὅτι πλὴν ἑνὸς ἡ βουλὴ μεθ’ ἡμῶν. τούτων δὴ τῶν μεθ’ ἡμῶν ἐν πρώτοις ἐστὶ Λη- τόιος οὐδενὸς οὔτε ῥήματος οὔτε ἔργου φειδόμενος, προσθείην δ’ ἂν ὡς οὐδὲ χρημάτων. τῶν γὰρ νέων οἷς ἐν πενίᾳ συμ- βαίνει λόγων ἐρᾶν οὐκ ἐᾷ τὸ πρόθυμον ὑπὸ τῆς πενίας βλα- βῆναι. ποιεῖται δὲ καὶ τὴν πρεσβείαν αὐτὸς τὸν θεῖον τὸν ἐμὸν ἀφεὶς τῆς ὁδοῦ καμόντος γὰρ ἐκείνῳ τοῦ σώματος, τοῦ δὲ ἄρχοντος ἐγκειμένου καὶ κελεύοντος ἢ βαδίζειν ἢ πείθειν ἕτερον αὐτοῦ μὴ χείρω τὸν μὲν ἐκεῖνος ἔδειξεν, ὁ δὲ ὑπέστη 3, καὶ νῦν γενοῦ περὶ τοῦτον οἷος ἂν ἦσθα πρὸς ἐκεῖνον.
