Letter 761: Quite a few young men have come from you to us, yet not a single letter from you.

To Aetius. (362) Not a few young men have come from you to us, but no letter from you. Are we to say, then, that you are sparing of paper, or of ink? For you are certainly not at a loss for words such as suit a letter, you who in the courts flow more abundantly than the springs. Perhaps, because you have displayed the wealth that you used to keep hidden, in giving your little daughter in marriage, you have become a person of dignity in our eyes. But I was thinking you ought now rather to be modest, for in that earlier time you yourself were rich, whereas now you are the kinsman by marriage of a rich man. And this is to have what is yours in another's keeping. It is therefore more fitting now that you both remember your friends and do the things proper to one who remembers, so that you may have allies as well against your son-in-law, should he do what most fathers-in-law do, who, having one set of things in hand but looking toward another, quarrel.

Ἀετίῳ. (362) Νέοι μὲν οὐκ ὀλίγοι παρ’ ὑμῶν ὡς ἡμᾶς, γράμμα δὲ οὐδὲν παρὰ σοῦ. πότερον δή σε χάρτου φείδεσθαι φῶμεν ἢ μέλανος; οὐ γὰρ δὴ λόγων γε τῶν πρὸς ἐπιστολὴν ἀπορεῖς, ὅς γε ῥεῖς ἐν δικαστηρίοις ὑπὲρ τὰς κρήνας. ἴσως ὅτι τὸν πλοῦτον, ὃν ἔκρυπτες, ἐκδιδοὺς τὸ θυγάτριον ἔδειξας σεμνὸς ἡμῖν γέγονας. ἐγὼ δέ σε ἠξίουν νῦν μέτριον εἶναι, τότε μὶν γὰρ αὐτὸς πλούσιος ἦσθα, νῦν γε κηδεστὴς πλουσίου. τοῦτο δέ ἐστιν ἕτερον ἔχειν τὰ σά. μᾶλλον οὖν σε νῦν εἰκὸς καὶ μεμνῆσθαι τῶν φίλων καὶ τὰ τοῦ μεμνημένου ποιεῖν, ὅπως καὶ συμμάχους ἰπὶ τὸν κηδεστὴν ἔχῃς, ἢν ποιῇ τὰ τῶν πολλῶν κηδεστῶν, οἱ τὰ μὶν ἔχοντες, εἰς δὲ τὰ βλέποντες μάχονται.
