In manifold ways God has opened to us the paths of salvation at every season, but now most of all, when the scandals have entered into the Church of Christ and the faithful of God are being tested as in a smelting-furnace. Some, then, contend in the struggle, kept under guard in prisons for the word of truth; others, having been beaten and put to the question, and yet others, have chosen exile, taking second place in the sufferings. Some run about, bringing word of assistance, while certain ones secretly minister to those held under guard, and others along the way receive those who pass through according to the Lord. These are the paths, and still more besides. You, then, O man of God and faithful servant, as I learn, are one of such people, acting as host and guide [xenagon] to our brethren as they journey in Christ. Blessed are you, and it shall be well with you: you offer the grace to God. Hold fast, I beg you, to the work which you are engaged in, so that, contending together with those who labor in this, you may also receive together the rewards from God, who measures out all things that come to pass.
