Fabatus

Roman equestrian of Comum; correspondent and grandfather-in-law of Pliny the Younger|Comum (Como)
Lucius Calpurnius Fabatus was a wealthy and prominent equestrian (eques) of Comum (modern Como) in northern Italy, the home town of Pliny the Younger and the paternal grandfather of Pliny's third wife, Calpurnia, whom he helped raise. Earlier in his career he had been implicated in a treason (maiestas) trial under Nero around 65 AD but escaped condemnation when the emperor fell (Tacitus, Annals 16.8). By the time of Pliny's correspondence (c. 100-107 AD) he was an aged and esteemed family patriarch and local benefactor, and Pliny addresses several letters to him as a respected elder, discussing family matters, Calpurnia's health, and civic affairs at Comum.
