31. ENNODIUS TO THE LORD POPE. The ever-watchful care of your Blessedness attends to those who serve, as though they were placed before your very eyes, in whatever place they may be, and without any holidays [respite], while it bestows the favor of its grace upon the experienced, it invites strangers as well. For indeed many fruits are reaped from the spectacle of another's labor, since the man learns to exert his effort in whose sight the rewards of toil and fidelity are repaid. And would that the outcome were equal to our prayers, and that what I have learned to desire on behalf of religion might be granted to fulfill! My lord, presenting the humility of my service and content with a sparing manner of speech in the greatest matters, I leave it to be disclosed by the letters of the aforesaid man what the lord bishop your brother has felt concerning the embassy that was sent.
