Having learned that you have departed from the place where you were until now and have gone down to the steward [oikonomos, the monastery's administrative officer], my child, seeking to conduct yourself well, I gave glory to my good God, casting off my grief; for indeed I was grieved not a little that you remained there contrary to the commandment, not having joined us at the time of the persecution and of our distress on account of our true worship, although you are one of the leading men and of those able to help by deed and by word. But nevertheless it came to pass, and may God forgive you. Now therefore, my beloved child, walk in holiness, building up again your tardiness unto the benefit of your brethren and of others, persevering unto death and not betraying Christ. Be not alone, but with one or even with a second, and altogether with that one whom he chooses, whoever he may be; for it is not possible for me to give a definitive instruction. Cease not to remember me; your brethren greet you.
