When I learned that you too, having been seized by the lawless ones, have contended for Christ, holy Basil and descendant of Basil the Great [St. Basil of Caesarea, the fourth-century Cappadocian father], I rejoiced, I gave glory, I gave praise, I gave thanks to the Lord, who called you into the fellowship of his sufferings through the blows which you bore upon your back and through your present imprisonment. It was fitting, then, it was fitting that one so devoted to learning and so devoted to God should not be seen to be without his share in the honor of those who confess [the faith], in the God-given glory [theodoxia] of the confessors, but that you should partake along with the others and become renowned and be set as a light for those in darkness. Stand firm, therefore, O noble one, also for the things to come, fearing nothing; for Christ is with you, he who conquers in us and who has conquered the strong one and has given him to us to be trampled underfoot.
