Evagrius Ponticus (c. 345-399) was a monk, theologian, ascetic writer, and letter writer from Pontus who served in the circle of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus before settling in the Egyptian monastic world at Nitria and Kellia. His letters give spiritual counsel to ascetic and ecclesiastical correspondents and preserve an important Greek and Syriac strand of late Roman monastic thought.
