Faustus of Riez

Faustus Reiensis

bishop|405-495 AD|Riez
Faustus of Riez (c. 405-c. 495) was a British-born monk who became abbot of the great island monastery of Lerins and later bishop of Riez in southern Gaul. The leading theological voice of so-called Semi-Pelagianism, he defended a synergistic view of grace and free will against strict Augustinian predestinarianism in his treatise De gratia, and was a celebrated ascetic and preacher whose orthodoxy was posthumously contested. Exiled for a time by the Arian Visigothic king Euric for his Catholic stance, he was venerated locally as a saint and stood at the center of the literary circle of late-fifth-century Gaul, exchanging letters with Sidonius Apollinaris, Ruricius of Limoges, and other luminaries.
