Avitus of Vienne

Alcimus Ecdicius Avitus

bishop|450-518 AD|Vienne
Alcimus Ecdicius Avitus (c. 450-518) was bishop of Vienne in the Rhone valley and the foremost churchman of Burgundian Gaul in his generation. Born into the senatorial Gallo-Roman aristocracy, he was a kinsman of the emperor Avitus and of Sidonius Apollinaris, and he succeeded his father Isychius (Hesychius) in the see of Vienne around 490. A skilled diplomat and theologian, he worked to win the Arian Burgundian kings to Catholic orthodoxy, famously cultivating King Sigismund's conversion, and he combated the Arian and Eutychian heresies while defending Roman primacy in correspondence with Pope Hormisdas during the Acacian schism. Avitus was also an accomplished poet: his biblical epic 'De spiritalis historiae gestis' (on Genesis and Exodus) is one of the masterpieces of late Latin verse, and his surviving letter collection is a key source for Gallo-Roman politics and ecclesiastical affairs.
