Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)

pope|540-604 AD|Rome
Gregory I, known as Gregory the Great (c. 540-604), was pope from 590 until his death and one of the most consequential figures of the early medieval Latin West. Born to a wealthy Roman senatorial family, he served as urban prefect of Rome before renouncing public life to become a monk, founding monasteries on his own estates; he later served as papal apocrisiarius (envoy) at Constantinople before his election to the see of Rome. As pope he reorganized the Church's vast estates, fed the city during famine and plague, negotiated with the Lombards, asserted Roman primacy, and dispatched the Augustine mission that converted Anglo-Saxon England in 597. His enormous surviving correspondence (the Registrum epistolarum, some 850 letters) and works such as the Moralia in Job, the Pastoral Rule, and the Dialogues made him a foundational authority for medieval Christianity; he is counted among the four great Latin Doctors of the Church. His many letters to Visigothic Spain - notably to King Reccared and Bishop Leander of Seville after the Visigoths' conversion from Arianism - account for the 'Wisigothic' label attached to this record.
